In July, LEARN! hosted a seminar by Dr Junlin Yu (Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki) titled 'How mindsets create complex motivational systems and are shaped by school context.
Here is a short description of the talk:
Growth and fixed mindsets impact learning by orienting students to adopt different goals (learning versus performance). In this talk, I will first describe findings that challenge the straightforward linkage between mindsets and achievement goals (Yu & McLellan, 2020). I will then discuss key teacher and school factors that can communicate growth and fixed mindset beliefs to students, along with implications for educators who hope to promote students’ growth mindset (Yu et al., 2022).
Dr Junlin Yu is a motivation researcher interested in how students’ growth motivation impacts learning as well as what teachers and schools can do to create motivationally supportive environments. Prior to joining Helsinki University, he earned his PhD and MPhil from the University of Cambridge.
