A new podcast was released by the knowledge department of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in the Netherlands. The podcast touches upon topics such as the complexity of education systems and its consequences for how we can and should improve the quality of schooling.
Prof. Melanie Ehren has featured in one of the episodes to talk about the role of inspection and accountability in the governance of education systems, reflecting on the role of trust, the decentralised nature of the Dutch system and how performance indicators can inform change but also tend to lose their value over time. These reflections are illustrations of an overall argument that education systems are complex: they are multi-layered where change on one level often affects change at another level without knowing or being able to predict what this looks like.
