Learning, interest and curiosity
What does it take for human beings to flourish as individuals in today's and tomorrow's world? Education aims to contribute to this, at all levels, from pre-school to higher education and beyond, in courses and museums. What is important for this? In her oration, Maartje Raijmakers discusses three topics on which her academic work is focused, both research, education, and engagement with society concerning learning, interest and curiosity.
Maartje Raijmakers
Maartje Raijmakers studied philosophy at the University of Amsterdam where she graduated in philosophical logic with an Artificial Intelligence endorsement in 1992. She obtained her PhD from the Psychology Department of the UvA in cognitive development (1996). At the same department, she was a postdoc for 10 years on various personal fellowships before becoming an associate professor (UhD). Since 2011, she has been an affiliated professor of cognitive development at the University of Amsterdam (Department of Psychology) and science museum NEMO (until 2027). From 2015 to 2018, she was also associate professor at the Department of Pedagogy and Educational Sciences at Leiden University. Since 2018, she has been a national and international researcher as a full Professor of Orthopedagogy and Educational Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
