On February 28th, LEARN! hosted a seminar with Dr. Anouk Zuurmond- a Philosopher of Education-  who joined LEARN! at the beginning of 2023. The seminar was titled "Why don’t we turn schools into businesses? Ayn Rand, Hannah Arendt & Simone Weil on issues of privatisation in education." 

During the seminar, Zuurmond discussed the outline for a book for which she has received funding by the ‘Lira Fonds’, with the aim to publish academic research for a larger audience in Dutch (see https://www.lira.nl/Articles/lira-fonds-wijst-vier-beurzen-toe-voor-toegankelijk-geschreven-boeken-).

The book, with the provoking working title Why don’t we turn schools into businesses? will discuss different philosophers on the role of schools in society to address the issue of increasing marketization / privatisation / public – private partnerships in education.
